Caen is a city with a rich historic past. In the Middle Ages, William the Conqueror founded two great abbeys: The Ladies’ Abbey (Abbaye aux Dames) and the Men’s Abbey (Abbaye aux Hommes). These medieval architecture gems are a perfect mix between Gothic and Romanesque styles. In the heart of the city centre, discover one of the largest medieval fortresses: the castle. Take a walk along the ramparts and enjoy the view over the city.

Take the time to stroll around the streets full of bookshops, artisans and good restaurants. You will understand why Caen received the “city of history and art” label while walking past a medieval house or a Renaissance hotel. Caen was badly impacted by the World War II bombings and rebuilt in the 1950s. The university’s campus was the first building being rebuilt and was listed as a historic monument.
